I've recently fallen madly in love with 80s Purple. Especially after I found these flat top wayfarer clear lens glasses for only $12. But since I don't actually wear glasses, and can't take myself too seriously while parading around in fake clear glasses, I decided to replace the clear with shaded lenses.
For anyone in the NYC area in need of eyewear assistance, OPTICAL 88 in Chinatown is your best bet. They were fast, friendly, and affordable.
And go check 80s Purple for their fabulously affordable and unique selection.
My new neighbor Gigi was wearing a gorgeous set of drop temple sunglasses this weekend. I love that classic vintage grandma feel to them. Especially when they have such ornate details on the side.
The Ray-Ban Wayfarer is a design of sunglasses manufactured by Ray-Ban since 1952, when their design was a revolutionary break from the metal eyewear of the past. Wayfarers enjoyed early popularity in the 1950s and 1960s, especially after they were worn by Audrey Hepburn in the 1961 movie Breakfast at Tiffany's. Though the sunglasses had faded from the limelight by the 1970s, a lucrative 1982 product placement deal brought Wayfarers to their height of popularity.
Despite the fact I feel the wayfarer style is being abused by certain Hollywood Socialbites, we can't ignore it's treasured place in sunglasses history. Without a doubt, Audrey Hepburn wore them best in Breakfast at Tiffany's, second runner up of course is Bob Dylan.
This style of sunglasses is said to mimic the kind most famously worn by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis in the 1960s. While they may not seem very flattering for a majority of face shapes, the functionality of hiding from the paparazzi makes them a must have.
Still on my quest for my next pair of sunglasses, today I dedicate this post to the Oversized Square Sunglasses. Often dubbed the Jackie O's, these glasses prove to be perfect for hiding from the paparazzi. And for those of us who don't actually face that problem, they're perfect for hiding that morning after hangover.
Aviator sunglasses also known as "Pilot shades" are a style of sunglasses that were developed by Ray-Ban. They are characterized by dark, often reflective lenses having an area two or three times the area of the eye socket, and metal frames with wire temples which hook behind the ears. Contemporary models are often polarized (although wearing polarized sunglasses for flying is unwise since they may mask the light glinting off an oncoming aircraft).
As I have previously mentioned, sunglasses can be a crucial accessory that will say a lot about you to every person you pass on the street.
I've been inspired by the recent unintentional, yet self-inflicted demolition of my $3.00 Prince Street Vendor sunglasses to further elaborate on this subject with a series of posts dedicated to some classic styles of sunglasses.
I learned a lesson a long time ago: I must never spend more than $20 on a pair of sunglasses. If I do, they will be sat on, dropped, severly scratched or just lost. Coincidentally, I've had my $3.00 Prince Street Vendor sunglasses for over a year now and granted they may be a little scratched, but they are certainly still in tact (and not lost).
Think of your sunglasses as another staple piece that will say a lot about you to every person you pass on the street.

I will not lie. I did not know about Oliver Peoples before this Saturday, when DG1 and I were bummin around SoHo. I haven't spent more than $12 on a pair of sunglasses in years. I just throw em in my bag throughout the day, and if they get scratched or broken, then I just walk down to Prince and Broadway and buy another pair off the street for $3.
Now, if I were to drop a significant amount of cash on a pair of sexy ass sunglasses, I would go with Oliver Peoples in a heartbeat.
